"Four first-rate musicians combining their talents in a unique
ensemble.
I can't wait to hear them."
David Matthews
Counterpoise is a brand-new ensemble comprising some of the most sought-after instrumentalists in the UK. The founder members are Alexandra Wood (violin); Deborah Calland (trumpet); Kyle Horch (saxophone) and Helen Reid (piano). Counterpoise has been formed to give the first performances of a new work, On the Edge, commissioned from the outstanding young English composer, Edward Rushton. The musicians will be collaborating with distinguished actress Eleanor Bron and renowned singer Richard Angas, who will share the role of narrator. The programmes devised to frame On the Edge cross musical genres and explore the relationship between music, poetry and visual elements, seeking also to develop aspects of narrative and other extra-musical influences. They will explore the genre of melodrama from its 19th-century heyday through to the present day, interweaving resonant poetry and prose by Shelley and Poe and will also explore the relationship between sound and image by juxtaposing music and carefully selected film.
